What is a host, host name and host record?

A host is a computer on the internet. Computers are named in ways that people can read them, for example: bob, www, or opus. These names are also called a computer's host name. The host name, combined with a domain name, gives you a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), for example: fred.directnic.com. A fully qualified domain name identifies a unique computer, or set of computers. A host record is stored on a DNS server and points an FQDN to an IP address.
