Can I add a CNAME to just the domain by itself?

You can add a CNAME to just the domain, but it generally is not a good idea. It will disable your ablity to get email, since the CNAME will be the only record that can be server. This is a requirement of the design of DNS.

If you need to redirect your main domain to a CNAME, set the domain by itself to the IP: 74.117.217.26

This server will redirect the domain to the domain with a "www" prepended with a 301 redirect.
