What is an SSL Certificate?

SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer, which is an encryption technology to create a secure and private connection between the web server and the visitor's browser. This allows information to be transmitted over the internet and be protected from snooping, tampering or forgeries.

This feature is especially important when transmitting sensitive information over the web, such as credit card numbers, personal information, or passwords. Search engines also value the presence of SSL Certificates by giving your website a boost in its page rankings. More benefits to having an SSL Certificates are listed on the following Directnic page:

When your site is protected by an SSL certificate it will be indicated by a padlock icon (or a green address bar) and resolve to an https:// address instead of http://. When your visitors see this indication, they can rest assured their information is secure when visiting your site.

SSL certificates are issued by Certificate Authorities who establish a chain of trust between the hosting server where the certificate is installed and the SSL providers. Directnic is currently offering SSL Certificate options provided by Sectigo (formerly known as Comodo) here:
