What do I need to know before I start a transfer to Directnic?

So you want to transfer your domain name to Directnic?  We’re thrilled to have you!

Basically, you’ll need to make sure your domain is unlocked for transfer and have your authorization/transfer code ready. Then to begin your transfer, go here: https://directnic.com/transfer

For an in-depth overview of making your domain ready for transfer to Directnic, please read the step by step information below.

There are a few things you can check about your domain name to make sure your transfer goes as smoothly as possible:.

  1. The current Admin Contact:

Before we can transfer your domain name for you, we need to check with the current Admin Contact for permission to change registrars!  That’s why it’s important that you make sure that you can receive e-mail at the address that is currently on file for the Admin Contact in a WHOIS lookup before you start the transfer process.  Checking iis easy! Simply type your domain name in a WHOIS lookup tool – we’ve got one you can use here – and see what e-mail address is listed under Admin.  If the e-mail is not one you have access to, or if your domain is using a privacy service, you will need to contact the current registrar to update your contact information!.

  1. The domain’s eligibility:

We know you’re eager to get your domain to Directnic, but there are a few things that can stop a transfer dead in its tracks!  Before you start your transfer, run a WHOIS, lookup (available here!) – to check for the following exceptions for your domain name:

Has your domain name been registered for at least 60 days

Domain names that have been registered for less than 60 days can not be transferred.

Is your domain name currently active (not expired)?

Many registrars prohibit expired domain names from being transferred.  You’ll need to check with your current registrar to see if they allow for the transfer of expired domain names if your domain name is showing expired.  To sidestep this issue, we recommend that you start the domain name transfer process at least 10 days prior to the expiration.   Don’t worry! The remaining time you have at your current registrar will transfer over with the domain name, so there’s no reason to hold off on your transfer!

Have you renewed the domain name after it expired?

If you have renewed the domain name after it has expired, you may need to wait 45 days before the domain name can be transferred.

  1. The domain status:

The domain name must be in unlocked status for it to be eligible to transfer.  Before you start your transfer, run a WHOIS lookup (available here!) to check if the domain status is currently showing “unlocked” or “ok”.  This means it’s ready to transfer! Most registrars’ default is locked.  Please contact the losing registrar for instructions on unlocking the domain name if you’re not seeing “unlocked” or “ok” as the status.

  1. The Auth Code:

The Auth Code is a unique code that must be provided during the transfer process to prove that you have the authority to transfer your domain name.  You’ll need to get your Auth Code from the registrar you’re transferring away from.  Be aware that the Auth Code goes by many different names – you may see it listed in your previous registrar as Auth Code, EPP Key, EPP Code, Transfer Key, etc.

Got all that?  Great!  You can head on over to the transfers section of our site to get your domain name transfer started.  Still need help? Check out the Knowledgebase article on starting your transfer for more information on the next steps!
